“How can I not think about the very thing defines me?”. The obsessive thinking that can come with DP isn’t far from an addiction. Letting go of obsessive thinking is easier said than done. This person is living without a cushion, and suddenly things feel different raw and uncertain.įor those of you currently dealing with DP, a good piece of advice I have for you is working on letting go of obsessive thinking (and for those of you with different symptoms, I hope to write more on these as soon as I can). There is a point where you realize that religions are chosen representations of something with no form. There is a point where science throws its hands up and says, “I have no idea!”. They realize that there is a point you reach where everything stops. The person on the right, however, has begun thinking about the edge of that reality. This is how the majority of people experience their lives. They are living with a nice little cushion between themselves and the unknown. They only think about this material world and their human life and they aren’t particularly aware of themselves. The person on the left does not question their reality. The circles they reside in resemble the material world, the physical domain, their reality, and everything that we know and understand about life. The two black dots resemble two different people with two different perceptions of life.

This diagram is fairly simple, but it helped me get a picture of what was bothering me. There are a lot of things we don’t know about perception and these two states of consciousness may be intertwined in many ways we don’t understand. That being said, this view is based off of my own experiences. Sometimes when sufferer’s of DP explain their experiences they are misinterpreted by others to be experiences of Enlightenment, but this usually isn’t the case.

Depersonalization is characterized by obsessive thinking, especially around one’s reality and existence, while Enlightenment is characterized by a quiet mind and the feeling of a deep understanding of existence. In my opinion, the most important distinguishing factor between these two states of consciousness is the individual’s mental patterns.

In contrast to Enlightenment, this change in perception is often caused by trauma and causes a feeling of unease instead of bliss. Depersonalization is often called “the ego-death disorder”. People that feel depersonalized find themselves disconnected from their bodies, losing their sense of self, and feeling as if they’ve fallen into a void. They are similar in many ways, but with different causes and different reactions. Depersonalization is sometimes said to be Enlightenment’s twin.
